Orchha, Madhya Pradesh to Sanchi, Madhya Pradesh

During the planning stage of our journey to the central area of India, we noticed another World Heritage site near the city of Bhopal, at Sanchi. Since we had booked all of our train tickets for the following part of our journey we had no flexibility to change plans and take a day or two for this detour, but now that we had finished the main atractions we felt we could fit it into our trip.

Starting from Orchha early morning, we travelled back to Jhansi by autorickshaw, where we boarded the express train to Bhopal. Bhopal is the capital of the state of Madhya Pradesh and is also famous for the lethal gas leak on the chemical plant of the American company Union Carbide that happened in the early 80’s. From Bhopal we went to the bus station to get our bus to Sanchi. The bus ride was 45 km and took only two hours, but the bus was very full and the traffic was very intense. We survived the ride and at the end of the day we had taken refuge at the Sri Lanka Mahabodi Society Guesthouse. At the guesthouse we found the white dressed buddhist Sri Lankan pilgrims that go around India visiting important Buddhist sites. We have noticed that in general they are scorted by one or two Buddisht monks directing and also guiding their trip.
